Gay Masculism is a cultural movement and critical perspective.
Like Masculism, lesbian and gay studies, and queer theory, Gay Masculism is characterised by contestation and revision. Nevertheless, if one key theme could be isolated it would be an analysis of heterosexuality as an institution. Gay Masculist texts work to denaturalise heterosexuality and, based on this denaturalization, to explore heterosexuality's "roots" in institutions such as patriarchy, capitalism and colonialism. Additionally, Gay Masculism advocates gay as a rational result of alienation and dissatisfaction with these institutions.
- Main article: Separatist Masculism
In separatist Masculism, gay is posited as a key Masculist strategy that enables men to invest their energies in other men, creating new space and dialogue about men's relationships, and typically, limits their dealings with women.
