Bayard Rustin war ein Aktivist für Gewaltfreiheit, Menschenrechte, Schwulenrechte und Sozialismus, und offen schwuler, schwarzer Mann. Er war Mentor von Martin Luther King. 1977 traf Walter Naegle, mit dem er zehn Jahre bis zu seinem Tod 1987 zusammen war.
